Reflection Journal Pre-work: Clarifying My Idea

Performance Problem: When students miss class, they miss important information for the following classes.

Importance of closing this gap: This is important because parents pay for these classes, and they are extra-curricular. We want students to be successful in these classes and enjoy themselves so that they continue to take more classes. We also teach classes for one hour, so time is limited to get students caught up.

Project requirements:

This unit should be between 3 and 6 hours of instructional time, you should have expertise in content of unit.

Yes, there are five classes, one hour each week (Five hours total); however, due to the age of the audience, I feel shorter videos or instructional units may be more appropriate. Since I taught these classes, I am very familiar with the content, material, and common questions that come up.

The unit should include an introduction, conclusion, and 4-6 different types of instructional activities

Introduction: introduction on how the software works, focusing on components we will use most often in the instruction.

Conclusion: We discuss how to present the final apps, and what students have learned while making them.

4-6 Activities: There are five lessons, each with a different activity.

At least one activity should be about ‘receiving content information’

Content regarding basic computer science concepts is covered in each class, in relation to that day’s activity.

At least one activity should be about ‘practice with content’

Each lesson has an activity, where students produce an entire app, usually a game or something functional.

At least one activity should be about ‘assessment of learners content knowledge/skills’

At least once during class, students test the knowledge of what they have learned through a debugging quiz, (For non-programmers, that means I write a program with something malfunctioning. The students must diagnose and fix this “bug.”)

At least one activity should include a debrief (e.g., of activity, of assessment, of unit)

Class ends by reviewing a completed program.

The unit may be delivered all in one sitting or consist of different sessions (e.g., class, home work, online, etc.)

I will need more information, specifics from my client as to the exact format; however, I anticipate this will be possible.

The unit may be classroom based, fully online, or hybrid

Again, I will discuss this with my client, as to the specifics.
